The D-Day invasion as it happened
Casualties from the invasion have been estimated at 10,000 dead or wounded
Early on the morning of June 6, 1944, tens of thousands of Allied troops converged on a stretch of coast in Normandy, northern France, and began the bloody task of securing a toehold in western Europe, which Nazi Germany had conquered four years earlier. The Americans had Utah and Omaha beaches in the west, then came the British at Gold, then the Canadians at Juno Beach and finally the British at Sword on the east.

'Healthy' newborn baby rescued from sewage pipe after being flushed down the toilet
Warning: This video contains images which some viewers may find distressing
The pipe was not wide enough for the firefighter’s hand to reach down to get to the newborn baby trapped inside. But, after a two-hour rescue operation, as shown in this series of startling pictures, “Baby No 59” was miraculously retrieved from a section of sewage pipe from beneath a toilet in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang at the weekend.
Firefighters found a newborn baby boy that had been flushed down a lavatory headfirst and became lodged in the sewerage pipe. They had to remove an L-shaped section of pipe, 10cm in diameter, and take it to a hospital, where doctors carefully used pliers to cut it open to release the infant. Video footage of the dramatic two-hour rescue was broadcast widely on television news bulletins and websites. Named Baby No 59 after the number of his hospital incubator, he was said to be in a stable condition last night.
Jinhua residents who watched the rescue footage arrived at the hospital with contributions of nappies, baby clothes and powdered milk.
Reports about the baby’s parents varied last night. According to The Jinhua Daily newspaper, police have questioned a 20-year-old unmarried mother who lives on the fourth floor of the block of flats.
One police officer suggested that the mother concealed her pregnancy and the baby fell into the toilet when she unexpectedly gave birth. Other reports said the child was a few days old when the mother accidentally dropped it into the lavatory.
“The woman was on the scene during the entire rescue process... and admitted [she was the mother] when we asked her,” the police officer, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Agence France-Presse news agency. He said his colleagues would continue to investigate whether the mother “had any malicious intentions” before deciding if charges should be filed against her. Police had no information about the baby’s father.
It is not uncommon for babies to be abandoned in China, which has imposed a one-child policy for more than three decades. Couples can face fines if they violate the policy. But this latest case has led to widespread soul-searching about the country’s moral state on Sina Weibo, the microblogging site which is China’s version of Twitter.
One user, Weixian de Shuozhuo, wrote: “This kind of thing makes me speechless. Since I was young, I’ve seen deserted babies on trash heaps. It seems that in Chinese people’s eyes, throwing a baby away is not an evil thing.”
Others were more sympathetic. “I feel sad for the [baby’s] mum. At the same time I am startled by the miracle of life. I hope this child will grow up as someone who achieves greatness,” wrote Gui da Shushu.

'After Earth' Review: Will Smith and son hard to watch in bland, predictable film
The Fox news review of The film "After Earth". They say that it is a predictable film from the smith clan...
"This isn’t Shyamalan’s worst film, though it is his blandest. Even in his weaker or more contrived films, the “Sixth Sense” director usually provides something worthwhile to take away, mostly with his scene compositions or cinematography, a performance or two, or even his refreshing use of James Newton Howard’s music. But with “After Earth,” even the minutest of his signatures are missing. This is the least “M. Night Shyamalan” M. Night Shyamalan film."

Grumpy Cat goes from strength to strength
She is already an internet sensation with a book deal – and now a movie star in the making too. Let's hope she has thanked her agent.
Age: 1.
Appearance: Take a wild guess.
OK, I'm picturing a cat. Yes.
But it looks – how can I put this? – almost disgruntled. There you go.
What a funny idea! Many people think so. And this is a real cat. Her name is Tardar Sauce (a misspelling of tartar sauce, which she was said to resemble), and she lives with the Bundesen family in Arizona. She looks grumpy because her mouth is slightly deformed by a genetic disorder.

T. Rex Terrorizes Bridal Party: Best Wedding Photograph Ever?
Conceived by Louisiana photographer Quinn Miller for his friend James Lowder's wedding to Katie Young at the Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana on Sunday, the image shows the terrified bridal party being chased by a massive T. Rex.
Miller tells Yahoo! Shine very few people at the wedding knew of his plan, but the bride and groom were both completely game. "After we took our formal pictures, we set up the shot. They [the wedding party] really sold it. They are what made it work."
He acknowledges that he has seen similar Jurassic-inspired pictures before, but he told io9.com that he thought he could could do a better job with the retouching: "I'm really picky about Photoshop."
Miller retouched and posted the photo on his Facebook page early Monday morning with the note "Things got really crazy at the Lowder wedding last night," and the image immediately went viral. He tells Yahoo! Shine has been shocked by all the attention. On Wednesday, he says he had doubled the 'likes' on his Facebook page, when the photo had received 800 'likes.' By Thursday morning, that number had more than quadrupled. One commenter, who attended the wedding, joked, "If you live in St. Francisville, only leave your house if necessary. Keep your eyes open." Another quipped, "Is that the mother-in-law?"

Amanda Bynes to Chrissy Teigen: "You are an old ugly model"
The model Chrissy Teigen, who had tweeted on Tuesday: "The fact that Amanda Bynes has any 'support' to retweet is really unsettling. Support people with mental illness, yes. But don't condone/enable scary and poor behavior."
Bynes, 27, didn't like those tweets very much and decided to respond in a tweet in which she calls Teigen an "old ugly model." Keep in mind Teigen is also 27.
Bynes wrote: "Ur not a pretty model compared to me. I signed to Ford models @ age 13. I don't look up to u beauty wise. I'm far prettier than u! I'm offended that you're saying I have a mental illness when I show no sign of it, but thankfully not one man that wants me wants you and you are an old ugly model compared to me! You look 45! You're not pretty so I'm not intimidated by you! I think you're jealous that you're just an ugly model whos career is uninspiring! I don't respect you! You're no beauty queen! I'm a beauty queen!"
Teigen, who's engaged to singer John Legend, responded: "Nope. Not going to indulge. Wish the best for her, truly." She added, "I never ask anything of you guys but please. I don't need defending and please stop writing her. It's not funny, it's sad."
